How do I cling to Jesus?

How do I cling to Jesus?

As believers, our journey of faith begins and ends with Jesus. We really need to cling to Jesus, our Lord. He is the cornerstone on which our entire belief system stands (Ephesians 2:20). Just as a building needs a strong foundation to withstand the tests of time and weather, so too do we need Jesus as our unshakeable foundation. Clinging to Jesus is more than just an expression of our faith; it is a necessity. It is through our relationship with Him that we find hope, strength, and purpose. He is the anchor for our souls, steady and sure (Hebrews 6:19).

Acknowledging Our Need for Him

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9) In this verse, Paul reminds us that it is in our weakness that Christ’s power is made perfect. Clinging to Jesus means acknowledging that we are incomplete without Him. We admit that we need His wisdom, love, and grace to navigate through life. He is the source of all wisdom (Colossians 2:3), and when we recognize this, we find the strength to face life’s challenges. Like a ship in a storm finding safe harbor, our souls find rest in Him.

Surrendering Our Will

Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23) To cling to Jesus, we must surrender our will to His. This means trusting that His plans for us are better than anything we could imagine (Jeremiah 29:11). When we strive to control our lives independently, we limit ourselves to our finite understanding. True freedom and peace come when we surrender control to Jesus, trusting that His ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Abiding in Him

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” (John 15:4) Jesus is the true vine, and we are the branches. This beautiful analogy illustrates the necessity of remaining connected to Him. Our lives are meant to bear fruit, but we cannot do so in isolation. Our connection to Jesus is the very source of our fruitfulness. When we abide in Him, His love, joy, and peace flow through us, and we are able to live a life that is truly pleasing to God.

Finding Our Identity in Him

The world offers many fleeting and superficial ways to define ourselves. However, clinging to Jesus means finding our true identity in Him. “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12) When we cling to Jesus, we become children of God, and our identity is firmly rooted in this truth. No matter what storms life brings our way, we can stand firm in the knowledge that we are beloved children of the Most High.

The Joy of Clinging to Jesus

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11) When we cling to Jesus, we find true and lasting joy. His presence fills us with a sense of fulfillment that nothing else can match. In a world filled with temporary pleasures, Jesus offers us an eternal joy that sustains us through every season of life. No matter what challenges we face, we can always find reason to rejoice because of our relationship with Him.

Building a Deep and Intimate Relationship

Our relationship with Jesus is the most important relationship we will ever have, and it requires time and effort to cultivate. Prayer and meditation are vital tools in this process, helping us to connect with Him in a deep and meaningful way.

Prayer: Our Direct Line of Communication

Prayer is how we communicate with God, and it is a powerful way to deepen our relationship with Jesus. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (Philippians 4:6) Through prayer, we express our love, gratitude, fears, and hopes. But it’s also a time to listen for God’s still, small voice, giving us guidance and direction. It is a two-way conversation that draws us closer to Him.

Meditation: Aligning Our Hearts with His

Meditating on God’s Word allows us to reflect on His character and align our hearts with His. “But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.” (Psalm 1:2) As we ponder His Word, we gain a deeper understanding of who He is and His plans for us. Meditation quiets our minds, enabling us to hear God speak to our hearts. We can use Scripture, spend time in nature, or reflect on God’s goodness and grace. These moments of stillness allow us to recognize His presence and experience His peace. God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). As we journey through life, we need guidance, and the Bible provides the wisdom and direction we need.

Immersing Ourselves in Scripture

The Bible is a living, breathing testament to God’s love and our instruction manual for life. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16) When we immerse ourselves in Scripture, we gain wisdom for our everyday lives. It reveals areas where we need to grow and change, and it directs our paths. We learn more about Jesus and His character, which deepens our love for Him and strengthens our faith.

Reflecting on Our Experiences

Reflecting on our experiences through the lens of Scripture is a powerful way to discern God’s voice and leading in our lives. “We know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28) When we take time to process life’s events, we can see how God has been at work, even in the challenges. Reflection allows us to identify how God is shaping us and guides us toward a deeper understanding of His will. We were never meant to walk this journey of faith alone. Community is vital to our spiritual growth and stability.

Encouraging One Another

Being part of a community of believers means having a support system to encourage us. “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24-25) Life can be difficult, and having fellow believers to uplift and pray for us is a tremendous blessing. We can also find joy in encouraging others, knowing that our words and actions can make a difference in their lives.

Learning from One Another

Every believer has a unique story and perspective. When we surround ourselves with a community of faith, we gain valuable insights into how God is working in the lives of others. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom.” (Colossians 3:16) Through their experiences, we can learn valuable lessons and gain a broader understanding of God’s goodness and faithfulness.

Acknowledging God’s Sovereignty

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9) Surrendering control means acknowledging that God’s ways are higher than ours. We trust that He knows what is best for us, even when we cannot see the bigger picture. His plans for us are good, and He works all things together for our ultimate benefit (Romans 8:28).

Focusing on God’s Goodness

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18) When we practice gratitude, we shift our focus from what we lack to all that we have been given. We recognize God’s faithfulness and provision in our lives, fostering a heart of contentment. No matter our circumstances, we can always find something to be thankful for when we look to God’s goodness.

Expressing Our Thankfulness

Thankfulness is an act of worship that acknowledges God’s provision and care for us. “I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.” (Psalm 9:1) As we express our thankfulness, we are reminded of God’s faithfulness, and our trust in Him grows. Thankfulness also reminds us that everything we have is a gift from God, keeping us humble and dependent on Him.

Trusting Jesus in the Storms

“When the waves close in on me, Your laws are my delight; they are my counselors.” (Psalm 94:19, LEB) In times of trial, our faith can be tested, but it is also refined and strengthened. When we face difficulties with faith, we experience the tangible presence of Jesus, bringing comfort and peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Our faith becomes a powerful witness to a watching world.

Clinging to Jesus is the anchor for our souls, providing hope, strength, and purpose. It is an active and intentional pursuit, requiring us to surrender our will, abide in Him, and find our identity and joy in His presence. Through prayer, meditation, and Scripture, we cultivate a deep and intimate relationship with Jesus. God’s Word guides our paths, and the support of fellow believers uplifts and encourages us. By surrendering control and trusting God’s plan, we experience true freedom and peace. Cultivating gratitude and thankfulness directs our focus to God’s goodness, while our faith gives us strength and comfort in times of trial. May we always cling to Jesus, our firm foundation and our sure hope.
